Old School, New Generation…Classic Doo Wop to Modern Hits

Love the classic sounds of Frankie Valli, The Drifters, The Del Vikings? Ever wonder what Maroon 5 would sound like if they had lived in the Doo Wop era?

The Doo Wop Project begins at the beginning, tracing the evolution of Doo Wop from the classic sound of five guys singing tight harmonies on a street corner to the biggest hits on the radio today. In their epic shows, DWP takes audiences on a journey from foundational tunes of groups like the Crests, Belmonts and Flamingos through their influences on the sounds of Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, and The Four Seasons all the way to DooWopified versions of modern musicians like Michael Jackson, Jason Mraz, Adele and Maroon 5.

Featuring stars from Broadway’s smash hits Jersey Boys and Motown: The Musical with their hot band, The Doo Wop Project brings unparalleled authenticity of sound and vocal excellence to recreate – and in some cases entirely reimagine – some of the greatest music in American pop and rock history.  Your audience will enjoy a night filled with harmonies and classic ‘60s hits such as Randy & The Rainbows’ “Denise”, Thurston Harris’ “Little Bitty Pretty One”, The Skyliners “Since I Don’t Have You”, The Capris’ “Morse Code of Love”, and many more.  The show also includes doo-wop-inspired renditions of contemporary songs such as Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie”, Michael Jackson’s “The Way You Make Me Feel”, and Jason Mraz’s “I’m Yours”.

The level of talent, artistry and ability to entertain is off the charts with this show.  It’s an evening of pure energy and magic, where audiences are lifted from their seats with excitement by the power and charisma of the gifted young performers.

This show is SOLD OUT!!

Helen Welch is an internationally acclaimed vocalist, entertainer, producer and bandleader.  Her unique talent for arranging songs to make them her own, coupled with her ability to intimately engage her audience, has quickly earned her a large and devoted following around the globe. A native of England, Helen began her career on television’s Romper Room. Since her early success she has headlined with world-class organizations such as the BBC Big Band, Glen Miller Europe, Opus One and others at some of the UK’s most prestigious venues including: The Ritz, The Savoy, Blenheim Palace, The Grosvenor House Great Room, Claridges and many theatres in London’s West End. Additionally, she held starring roles in a variety of popular musicals including: Hello Dolly, Barnum, Carousel, 42nd Street, Calamity Jane and Oliver Twist.

After a very successful run in the U.K., Helen relocated to the United States to guest star in the Broadway musical Smokey Joe’s Café. Her success awarded her opportunities to sing with the Blossom Festival Orchestra, Grant Park Symphony Orchestra (Chicago), the Florida Symphony, the Columbus Jazz Orchestra and more. Since that time Helen has been producing and starring in a number of her own shows for Cleveland’s Playhouse Square, the Akron Civic Theatre, the Chautauqua Institution, E.J.Thomas Hall, Breckenridge Summer Festival and a whole host of other venues across the country. She is repeatedly asked to return to venues in which she has performed.

In 2006 Helen produced her big band CD “One Dream” using the nationally renowned Cleveland Jazz Orchestra. Rosemary Riddle, daughter of famed arranger Nelson Riddle, gave Helen the original Nelson Riddle arrangement of Zing Went the Strings of my Heart for her to perform and record on this CD. Apart from Judy Garland, Helen is the only other vocalist to have used and performed this arrangement on a recording and she still uses it today in her big band performances.

Helen also performs three of her other shows with orchestras using her world-class symphony arrangements and has performed with many different symphony orchestras throughout the U.S. and in England. Helen was invited twice to perform with the Blossom Festival Orchestra, which is part of the Cleveland Orchestra. For these particular concerts the Ella Fitzgerald Foundation gave Helen permission to go to the Library of Congress in Washington to go through Ella’s collection of music which she then used for these special symphony orchestra concerts.

In 2016 Helen’s CD, “Spellbound,” her fourth album, was up for a Grammy nomination. She is currently on a North American tour with SUPERSTAR: The Songs, The Stories, The Carpenters. This is the show for which Richard Carpenter gave Helen his blessing to produce and tour. It is a docu-musical that features fascinating backstage stories which very few people have ever heard before as well as over 20 of Karen and Richard’s  timeless songs. The show has bookings now through the end of this year and well into 2019 in various locations throughout the U.S.

The band has been striving to achieve that brilliant vision for almost three decades. Along the way, we’ve been part of Pittsburgh’s rebirth as a prosperous cultural center. We’re part of  Pittsburgh’s past, present, and future.

Rather than performing at a single concert hall, as many music organizations do, the River City Brass instead takes its concerts to venues across Western Pennsylvania in the neighborhood where people live and work.

This model, which is unique among American professional performing ensembles, makes it possible for many patrons to attend concerts who would otherwise be unable.

The Hit Men

Legendary Performers with Frankie Valli, Carole King, Cat Stevens & more!

Frankie Valli & The Four Seasons, Carly Simon, Elton John, Barry Manilow, Carole King, Tommy James & The Shondells, Sting, Paul McCartney, Three Dog Night, Christopher Cross and Alan Parsons were among the most beloved and influential pop music artists of the second half of the 20th century.  And all share another common denominator:  at some point during their careers, each had at least one of THE HIT MEN playing behind them on the road or in the studio.

THE HIT MEN – a supergroup consisting of Lee Shapiro, Jimmy Ryan, Jeff Ganz, Russ Velazquez and Steve Murphy – either played, sang or did both on some of the most memorable hits of the era, including “Who Loves You”, “Oh What a Night”, “The Loco-motion”, “Peace Train”, “Mony Mony”, “Joy to the World” and other songs in which they used their talents to spin wax into gold and platinum.

Lee Shapiro is a producer, arranger and musician who not only arranged some of the Four Seasons biggest hits, but also collaborated with artists ranging from Barry Manilow, Tony Orlando,  and Tommy James.

Jimmy Ryan began his career in the 1960s as lead guitarist, singer and a songwriter for The Critters.  He’s been a backup singer, arranger and occasional co-writer with Carly Simon, and his guitar is heard on albums by Cat Stevens, Jim Croce, Rod Stewart, Paul McCartney and Elton John.

Jeff Ganz is a bass guitarist and vocalist who has toured and recorded with music legends Johnny Winter, John Lee Hooker, Lou Reed, Tito Puente, Chuck Berry, Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Dr. John, Cheap Trick, Vanilla Fudge, and Blood, Sweat & Tears, among others.

Russ Velazquez is a singer, composer and arranger whose credits read like a musical Who’s Who.  He has collaborated with everyone from Sting, The Ramones, and LL Cool J to Luther Vandross, Korn and Paul Abdul.  He’s been nominated for four Emmy Awards for his work on Sesame Street and his song “2BA Master” hit the top of the children’s music charts and Radio Disney.

Steve Murphy is a drummer, singer, producer and engineer who has toured with The Alan Parsons Project, Jack Bruce, Eric Burdon and the Animals, Chuck Negron, Felix Cavaliere, Dave Mason, Todd Rundgren, Christopher Cross, Mark Farner, The Turtles, Mickey Dolenz, Gary Puckett, Mitch Ryder and over a dozen more major artists from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s.

THE HIT MEN connect with audiences on a level rarely seen by today’s music acts.  From the classic songs we all know and love (such as “Oh What a Night” & “You’re So Vain”) to the backstage stories never told until today, a HIT MEN show is like no other as they combine the music & the memories alongside exciting multimedia footage & visuals, evoking an unforgettable and nostalgic experience. “We can do whatever we want with complete legitimacy,” Shapiro said. “We have an emotional connection with the audience that tribute bands and soundalike bands can’t have. When we share our experiences and tell stories we aren’t reciting a script. We were there. When we tell you how ‘My Eyes Adored You’ was originally called ‘Sweet Eyes of Georgia,’ we know because we were there..”

Reliving the magic they created on stages around the world & in recording studios with some of our most cherished musical artists, when THE HIT MEN take the stage today, it’s easy to see why their music has transcended generations. Now touring across the country, they have performed at prestigious theatres such as Town Hall in New York City, the Artis-Naples in Naples, FL, the Gallo Theatre in Modesto and with symphony orchestras in Grand Rapids MI, Allentown PA, and Des Moines IA.   They offer presenters four unique shows:  The Hit Men Live; The Time Travel Tour, a rockin’ Holiday show, and a Symphony show.
